Do You Need Root Canal Therapy?

Cavities (tooth decay), begin on a tooth's exterior surfaces. If the condition is not treated quickly, it can worsen and spread to deeper parts of the tooth. On the inside of your teeth is a sensitive nerve tissue. When decay reaches deep enough to contact the nerve, it can cause severe pain in the tooth as well as inflammation in the tissues surrounding it. No amount of antibiotics can help preserve the tooth, but a root canal can.

Endodontic treatment repairs your tooth from the inside out, eliminating the need for a therapeutic dental extraction.

The Root Canal Procedure

During your root canal, Dr. Ada will numb your tooth with local anesthetic and remove the affected enamel and infected nerve. The nerve chamber is cleaned thoroughly to remove any residual bacteria, then medicated and sealed to prevent reinfection. It’s almost like placing a filling down inside of the root of the tooth, rather than just the portion above the gumlines.

If there is an aggressive abscess already present, Dr. Ada may prescribe an antibiotic to reduce swelling and inflammation so that the numbing medication can work more effectively.

You will also need a crown to cover and protect your tooth after endodontic treatment. Crowns distribute pressure from normal chewing and biting to prevent the underlying tooth from breaking during everyday use.

The Truth About Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment doesn't have to be more uncomfortable than a routine dental filling. You will feel numb before any treatment begins. Although severely infected teeth can cause pain, we will use special medication to ensure you don’t feel anything during the endodontic procedure.

Our Acworth office offers in-house sedation to help you relax during your appointment. Nitrous oxide is safe, fast-acting, and fully reversible for no lingering drowsiness.

Surgical Extractions

When teeth are severely infected or non-restorable, it may be best to remove them altogether. Doing so helps protect the health and integrity of adjacent teeth as it prevents any infection or decay from spreading. Dr. Ada may recommend extracting teeth such as those with aggressive decay, periodontal disease, or impacted wisdom teeth.
